Jos Richardson close Glews Garage after 40 years
Jos Richardson & Son Ltd regret to announce that following the consultation period with our employees a suitable alternative to closing Glew’s Garage has not been found. This included talking to a potential third party, but ultimately a deal was not possible. This means that the car dealership at Glew’s Garage will cease trading on December 20th 2019.
Our first thought is to the many hardworking and loyal employees of Glew’s Garage, both past and present, who have contributed to the business over the years. We wish them only the best for the future and feel certain that their skills and commitment will see them through.
Jos. Richardson & Son Ltd bought Glew’s Garage in 1978 from the Glew family, who had operated a garage there since the 1940’s. A young Tim Richardson was the driver of this decision and initially had considerable difficulty persuading other ‘wiser’ family members.
It was very successful throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s but over the last 15 years the franchised motor trade has been a tough place for small retailers and the story has been one of contraction and consolidation. We have not been immune from this and in the last decade or so we have seen the Vauxhall franchise, the 24 hr Recovery Service and the Accident & Repair Centre go. In 2016 the Company invested heavily into refurbishing the Peugeot showroom to try and give the dealership the best chance, however this did not yield the expected results.
Like any business we have undoubtedly made some mistakes over the years, but we do not believe that these mistakes are material to this decision. A dealership the size of Glew’s Garage needs to be run by an ‘owner operator’ who can take ultimate day to day responsibility for all aspects of running what is a complex business. This was not possible within our existing Company structure.
As a wider Company we have always been acutely aware of this risk, and that is why we very deliberately concentrated on acquiring and developing Petrol Stations, Convenience Stores and the Truckstop.
Jos. Richardson & Son Ltd will continue to look forward, whilst always fondly looking back on the past.
