Glews Garage sponsored team put through their paces at St George’s Park by Gary Neville

Town Moor Tigers, sponsored by Local Vauxhall retailer Glews Garage, were the lucky recipients of an end of season coaching session by England Coach Gary Neville last week.

The Tigers’ Under 14 side won an exclusive competition held by England team sponsor Vauxhall as part of their youth programme initiative.

Former Manchester United and England star Gary Neville hosted the training session at the England team headquarters at St George’s Park in Burton and gave the team an insight into life as an England player.

After putting the grassroots team through their paces Neville, who is now a coach with the full England team, presented the team’s end of season’s awards and hosted a question and answer session.

He commented; “It is great to see a local side enjoying their football and I am delighted to have coached them today.

“It is vital that we support grass roots football in England for the good of the game moving forward - this is a fantastic initiative and one I am proud to support.”

Dominic Joyes, Parts Manager at Glews Garage, said “Today has been a fantastic experience for everyone involved with the Town Moor Tigers.

“The players have learnt so much from Gary today and it will certainly be a day they will never forget.”

The Vauxhall Youth Programme initiative follows an extensive study by HPI, commissioned by The FA and England Team Sponsor and FA Youth Partner Vauxhall Motors, to determine the factors affecting drop out within the 14-17 age group and forms part of The FA Vauxhall Youth Programme.

According to HPI Research, the main reasons for the decline in participation in this age group is due to a realisation that they are not going to play professional football, club football becoming more competitive, the lure of other pursuits and external pressures including school work, travel arrangements and part-time jobs.

The FA Senior National Game Development Manager, Peter Ackerley said: “The FA is working closely with its Youth Partner Vauxhall alongside Sport England to understand the issues around the significant drop off in football at this age and ensure that we address this with the appropriate football offering tailored to engage the youth audience.

“This is about looking at what our young players are telling us and providing them with options to overcome the highlighted barriers, helping transition them into creating a football habit for life.

“We have no doubt the local support of the Vauxhall dealerships will make a significant positive difference to football in their local area.”
